SUVs lead fastest selling used cars in April following forecourts reopening to customers

  • Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross fastest selling used car in April
  • Ford leads the way in online views and volumes
  • Franchised dealers sell used cars over a week faster than in March

14 May 2021 SUVs dominated the top 10 fastest selling used cars in April on Motors.co.uk, following the reopening of dealer forecourts to buyers after months of lockdown, according to eBay Motors Group's OEM Market View.

The fastest selling used car on Motors.co.uk in April was the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, averaging just 21.7 days to sell, three weeks faster than the overall market average on Motors.co.uk. of 42.4 days for the month.

Other fast-selling SUVs in the top 5 included the Vauxhall Antara (27.1 days) in second place, followed by the Ford Edge and Kia Sorento both averaging 27.8 days.

The Aston Martin Vantage was the only non-SUV in the top 10, averaging 28.1 days to sell, making it the fifth fastest seller.

The most viewed brand on Motors.co.uk for used car buyers was Ford, taking a 12.6% share of all views, followed by Volkswagen (8.5%) and Vauxhall (8%).

German prestige marques also featured highly in searches with BMW the fourth most viewed brand, accounting for 7.3% of all searches, closely followed by Audi (7.1%) and Mercedes-Benz (6.9%).

Ford also topped the brand rankings by the volume of used cars being advertised online in April, followed by Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Audi and BMW.

However, the fastest selling volume brand was Land Rover with its models averaging 37.4 days to sell.

Overall, average days to sell for franchised dealers improved month-on-month by over a week from 44.6 to 36.4 days, with average stock levels increasing marginally from 51.3 to 55.1 units.

"SUVs were high on the shopping lists of buyers finally allowed to return to dealerships in person in April to view, touch and test drive cars once again, resulting in some remarkably fast used sales," said Dermot Kelleher, head of marketing and research at eBay Motors Group.

"The high levels of traffic across the eBay Motors Group platforms in the run-up to April suggests buyers visiting forecourts had thoroughly researched franchised dealer stock online and were ready to buy," he said.

"As market leader, Ford's lead in terms of online searches and speed of sale is no surprise, however, the appetite for prestige brands is also strong with searches for Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz resulting in fast sales," said Kelleher.
