- Ford, Volkswagen and Vauxhall the most searched brands for used cars
- Franchised dealers improve month-on-month days to sell
1 April 2021 Premium brand SUVs led the fastest selling used cars in March as buyers, cooped up in lockdown, turned their attention to aspirational purchases.
According to eBay Motors Group's Market View, Volkswagen's Touareg was the fastest selling model in March, taking an average of just 29 days to sell on Motors.co.uk.
Also among the top 10 fastest sellers were the Mercedes-Benz GLC and GLE, BMW X4, Audi Q7 and Land Rover Discovery Sport.
"For some used car buyers the long months of lockdown, missed holidays and unexpected financial savings, have prompted aspirational purchases of premium brand family-size SUVs," said Dermot Kelleher, head of marketing and research at eBay Motors Group.
Ford was the most searched brand for used car buyers, accounting for 12.9% of all views on Motors.co.uk in March, increasing its year-on-year share from 11.3%.
Volkswagen was the second most viewed brand with an 8.6% share, followed in third place by Vauxhall (8%).
Premium brands also performed strongly in the top 10 with BMW at number four with a 7.3% share, Mercedes-Benz at number five (7.1%), Audi at number six (7%) and Land Rover at number nine (3.6%).
Average days to sell for franchised dealers improved month-on-month averaging 44.6 days, compared to 49.1 days in February, while average stock levels increased marginally from 49.5 to 51.3 units.
"With the UK in lockdown throughout March, the used car market continued to show remarkable resilience with franchised dealers achieving their fastest stock turns so far this year on the back of high levels of online consumer activity," said Kelleher,.
"Overall, our March analysis reflects a strong desire among buyers to research and complete purchases as the UK prepares to move out of lockdown.
"With lockdown restrictions now being eased and buyers able to return to dealer forecourts this month, we're encouraged by just how strong online activity and enquiries have performed throughout Q1, suggesting a positive start for dealers once they're able to engage with customers face to face," said Kelleher.
